Visibility/Location: This event might be hard to find, if you aren't familiar with the area.  I didn't see any signs leading you to the attraction from the main road.  The only indication that a Haunted House was there was the "Road Closed" barriers on Washington Street.  Once you got closer, you could see the huge crowd of people waiting to get into the Haunted House.  You will, however, have no problem finding the event if you use online directions.
Wait Entertainment: There were a couple of actors tormenting the patrons waiting in line.  Also, since the exit was in full view of the people in line, they got to see other customers being chased out of the haunted house by "Leatherface" wielding a chainsaw.
Admission Price: $7.50
Length: 11 Minutes
Scare Factor: Medium-Low
Crowd Control: For the most part, groups were spaced appropriately; however, there was one time when groups bunched together in the dark maze section of the haunted house.

Summary:

The tour began with a nice intro scene. Sitting at a table, behind a draped red velvet curtain, a character dressed as the Phantom of the Opera read the rules of the haunted house. To enhance the atmosphere of the scene, there was a backlit stained glass window along one wall and a couple of candelabras with flicker bulbs. It was a nice presentation and it helped establish the proper mood for the rest of the attraction.

The Terror on Washington Street haunted house consisted of numerous scenes with assorted themes. A number of paths followed the perimeter of the building, and the real stone foundation & brick walls served to enhance the eerie feel of the attraction. The funeral scene featured an open casket behind a red velvet rope. Inside the casket was an actress in make-up and there were flowers draped across the bottom half of the casket. The library was one of the most detailed areas in the house, with bookcases lining the walls, vintage furniture throughout the scene and cobwebs everywhere. The scene was accented with spooky flicker lighting, to enhance the mood. In another area there was a witch sitting in a rocking chair on an old country porch. In front of her was a cauldron, with a glowing "fire" beneath it. In the Autopsy Room there was a body on a metal table, morgue drawers along the walls and a blood-filled IV bag hanging in the corner. Upon entering this area, an actor came out of a great hiding place. Another one of my favorite areas was the detailed graveyard. Patrons walked through the middle of the scene and there were tombstones behind wrought iron gates on both sides of the path, along with some realistic-looking trees. Since the top was covered with camouflage netting, this area had somewhat of a claustrophobic feel. There was one area that I found particularly creative, where they really played on people's fears of being separated. An actor was splitting up groups, making some people go through one door and the rest of the group to go through another. Unbeknownst to those in the group, both doors eventually led to the same path and everyone would be reunited in a short time, but you should have seen the initial reaction of some of the people who didn't want to be split from their group!

Throughout the attraction, all of the actors stayed in character. A lot of them were more passive, playing out their roles within the house, unaffected by patrons walking through. In fact, quite a few of them just stood there and didn't approach you. It did seem that the actors were a little more low-key than they had been in previous years, which made them more creepy than scary.

Well, it was another good performance by the Terror on Washington Street crew. Their yearly changes and unique ideas always make this a fun event to come back to, year after year. Since it wasn't an overly intense experience, this event would be appropriate for most audiences. With the modest admission price of only $7.50, it is definitely a bargain. Be sure to add this event to your list of Haunt visits.

Scare Factor: Medium
Crowd Control: They did an excellent job in this category.  I never ran into any other groups throughout the attraction.

Summary:

The Terror On Washington Street tour began with one of their characters telling you the rules of the house, with spooky music playing in the background.  From there, you made your way through several scenes of various themes, each separated by some very dark hallways.  The real brick walls of the structure were exposed in some areas, which enhanced the spooky "feel" of the attraction.  Some of the scenes were larger and more elaborate, while others were smaller.  The Terror on Washington Street group is very creative.  Even in the smaller scenes, they added a great deal of detail, making very efficient use of the space they had to work with.

One scene featured a realistic-looking pier, with a pool of standing water. Just as the group reached the far end of the scene, an actor wearing a raincoat, boots and hat jumped out of a hiding place to scare you.  The scene reminded me of the movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer".  In another area, a number of hissing female vampires converged on the patrons.  There was another area with a zig-zag path and red lighting shining through a haze of fog.  Numerous actors stalked you and a creepy mental patient in a wheelchair followed close behind our group, until we exited the scene.  The scare in the open casket funeral scene was very creative.  Inside the casket was a "corpse" and flowers were draped across the lower half of the casket.  Just when you thought the occupant of the casket was going to jump out at you, something completely different happened that took me off guard.  Another area had a birthday party scene, set in a kitchen.  The actress in the scene asked us "Would you like some cake?  He'll cut it for you."  Just then, an actor with a large knife jumped out of a hiding place.  One of my favorite scenes was set up to look like a hotel reception desk.  It featured a large wooden desk, a key rack with skull tags on the keys, a telephone and a desk lamp.  As our group walked by, the desk clerk simply performed his duties by picking up the phone and taking a reservation.  At that point, I wasn't sure what was going to happen.  There really wasn't a scare in the scene, but it was still entertaining.  The actor really set the mood and made it more believable by staying in character.  Sometimes anticipation of a scare can be just as satisfying as the scare itself.

The actors all seemed to be "into" the roles they were playing.  Some were very energetic and others were less intense, depending on their function inside the house.  Either way, their scares were on target and they all did a great job.  What really surprised me is that some of the actors actually reached out and tapped you on the shoulder or grabbed your ankles, which is something that you don't see happen at a lot of haunted houses these days.

This was another great year for the Terror On Washington Street crew.  In the past, they had consistently put on a great show and this year was no exception.  This attraction is well worth the admission price, so be sure to add it to your list of haunted houses to visit in October.

Crowd Control: Crowd control was great through most of the house, up until the dark maze at the end.  Since some patrons ahead of us were having a difficult time finding the way out, we ran into their group.  That is understandable, however, because it was pitch black inside the maze and you couldn't see two inches in front of you.

Summary:

Most of the scenes throughout the house were moderately detailed, while others were more highly detailed.  Crafting creative scenes and scares is something that the Terror on Washington Street crew has always been good at.  In one area, there was a pile of luggage.  As you walked by the pile of suitcases, an actor sprang out of a nearby trunk to scare you. In another area, I had to duck down and crawl through a tunnel to get through.  Another scene employed a divide and conquer strategy to gain a psychological advantage over the patrons walking through.  The actor in the scene split groups up, making one half go down one hallway and the other half go down a parallel path.  It was obvious that the group didn't want to be split up in this way, but eventually one group rejoined the other at the end of the hallway.  Other scenes seemed to build suspense, where you weren't sure what was going to happen.  For example, one girl was sitting in a living room scene, staring at the ceiling, with a glazed look in her eye.  Since she was a real actress and not a prop, we weren't sure what she was going to do. Everyone in my group kept a close watch as they slowly moved through the scene, to make sure she wasn't going to scare them from behind.

There were also a number of the scenes that featured contemporary Horror legends like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. Most of the scenes inside the house had appropriate music soundtracks and sound effects, as well as eerie colored lighting.

The actors, who were quite a mixed lot, did a good job too.  All of the pop-out scares were on target and effective.  Those actors were very enthusiastic and determined to scare you; however, some of the more visible characters, like the girl in the living room who was staring at the ceiling, Freddy Krueger & Michael Myers, seemed to be a bit more low-key and less intimidating.

This was another great performance by the Terror on Washington Street crew.  I do have to say that the show seemed considerably shorter than it was last year.  Even so, patrons still spent a good amount of time inside the haunt for the money spent, so it is still a decent value.   Terror on Washington Street usually comes through with some really creative scenes & scares, and this season was no exception.  I have attended for years and have never been disappointed.  I highly recommend checking this one out.

Visibility/Location: This attraction may be a little hard to find. I didn't really see any signs telling you which way to go, but the barricades with the orange flashing lights on top did help point you in the right direction.
Wait Entertainment: There were a couple of actors outside, scaring the people in line. The exit was in plain view of the entire queue line. It was quite entertaining to watch patrons getting chased out of the exit by a chainsaw-wielding actor!
Admission Price: $6.50
Length: 18 Minutes *

= Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time will vary.
Scare Factor: Medium.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere was developed by their creative, detailed scenes throughout the attraction.  Many of the scenes had their own custom music soundtrack and sound effects, which enhanced the spooky atmosphere they were trying to create.
Crowd Control: Crowd control was pretty good.  There was one time when another group caught up to mine, but it was in the dark maze, where people had trouble finding their way out.  They spaced out the groups quite well, considering the circumstances.

Summary:

The Terror on Washington Street crew really put together some great new scenes this year.  There was one that imitated the movie “The Ring”, with a girl in a well. The cockroach room was nice as well, with a plethora of cockroaches covering the walls and a girl sitting in a closet screaming that they were eating her alive.  One of the most interesting areas is one that I will call the "Hell Hallway". This was a narrow path, with crumbling walls on either side of the walkway, with demonic red light shining through and fog drifting out of the exposed wall boards.  On the other side of the walls, actors were taunting you.  What a great concept! That is where the Terror on Washington Street crew excels, using their creativity to construct innovative scenes.  Besides the many interesting scenes, there were some great dark hallways, as well.

The actors in this attraction performed well. They were very energetic and in most cases, on target with their attacks. They were very determined to scare and they stayed in character.   In most cases, you couldn't see the scares coming. There were a number of places inside the attraction where an actor would come bursting out of a hidden panel to surprise you.  The only scare that was really "telegraphed" was at a point near the end, where you got a whiff of gasoline, so you knew a chainsaw-wielding maniac was near.

I have always been impressed by their creativity.  Being a fairly low budget event, they always manage to put together a very entertaining show.  With the amount of time you spend exploring this attraction, the admission price of $6.50 is quite a bargain.

Other Customer's
Opinions:
Most of the customers really seemed to have a good time.  A couple of patrons stated that it was a good value, compared to some other haunted houses they had gone to.

Summary:

Terror on Washington Street had changed a number of scenes this year. In the introduction, you were presented the rules of the house, while standing in an old cobblestone street.  They had a very nice "Blair Witch" scene with trees, a tent and campfire.  Other themes included a nicely contoured cave, a detailed study, an open casket funeral, as well as many others. Many of these scenes were nicely detailed.

There were a couple of unexpected surprises along the way.  The car front end with the blaring horn and working headlights really took me off guard in the dark maze.  There was also a section were you had to crawl through on your hands and knees.  As  you were looking straight down through plexiglass into an illuminated area (where you thought the scare was coming from), they surprised you from the side.

Most of the actors were enthusiastic.  Everyone knew their roles and followed through.

As usual, this was another great performance by the Terror on Washington Street group.  They always come up with some really creative scares.  For the time spent inside, this attraction is well worth the modest $6.00 admission price.

2002 Terror on Washington Street Review

Date of Review: 10/19/02
Event: Clinton Haunted House - Terror on Washington Street
513 East Washington St.
Clinton, IL 61727
Cost: Adults: $6.00
$3 for kids 10 and under
Length: 20 Minutes*
* = Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time may vary.
Scare Factor: MEDIUM. Most of the actors performed well and really surprised you; however, I wish a few of them had been more enthusiastic. In a couple of scenes, like the open casket funeral, nothing really happened. But in general, everyone knew what they were supposed to do and did their jobs well.
Visibility / Location: OK: Although this event was near the middle of town, if you don't know exactly where you were going, finding it may be a challenge. It didn't seem to be in a very well lit area; however, they did have a large road sign a couple blocks from the event, telling you which direction to go.
Outside Appearance: OK: This event was held in a fairly plain-looking building. They did have some black lights, near the entrance, but nothing really elaborate.
Wait
Entertainment:
GOOD: There were a couple actors interacting with the crowd. One enthusiastic actor was chasing customers with a chainsaw.
Scene Detail: GOOD: Many of the scenes were detailed fairly well, while others were a little light on props.
Music / Sound Effects: GOOD: While going through the house, music from the Midnight Syndicate could be heard and also the theme from the movie "Halloween". Great choices; however, in some areas of the house it seemed too quiet. Additional music/sound effects would have been beneficial to their show.
Props / Animatronics: GOOD: There weren't any animatronics in this attraction and only a few professional props, but they did make good use of real trees, caskets, headstones and other props to help set the mood in the house.
Crowd Control & Patron Spacing: GREAT: I have no complaints in this category. I only ran into one group and that was in a dark hallway maze, where I hit a dead end and had to turn around and go the other way.
Other Patron's Opinions: Every customer I spoke with was pleased with their experience at Terror on Washington Street. Most people enjoyed the long duration of the attraction and the affordable admission price.

In this attraction, there was an eclectic array of scenes. The introductory scene was very creative. It was made up to look like a spooky living room. While in this first room, you are presented with rules and an introduction to the house by a ghostly face, that mystically moved from one "window" to another, on opposite sides of the room. On your trek through this house, you will find multiple scenes that are separated by long dark hallways. Some of the scenes were very creative, like the intro and the upside down room. They also had an tunnel you had to crawl through and a couple areas where you had to go up and down stairs.

Overall, this is an enjoyable event and well worth the admission price for the time it takes you to get through. They put a lot of work went into this one and it shows.
